At least one year (4 units) from an ACPE accredited program.

Ordination or canonical recognition as a clergyperson/religious leader in a chosen religious tradition in required, including endorsement for specialized healthcare ministry.

Board Eligible/Board Certified from Association of Professional Chaplains or NACC, NAJC, ACPE.

Three years of ministerial experience as a staff and/or pediatric chaplain, or parish ministry preferred.

Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies is a 285-bed maternity, GYN and neonatal hospital.  Part of the Arnold Palmer Medical Center, Winnie Palmer Hospital currently sees 14,000 births/year and has one of the largest neonatal units in the U.S. 

This position is salaried with benefits and is an important part of a team of eight full-time chaplains.  Weekday shifts are planned, and since we have 24/7 in-house chaplain coverage there are no on-call shifts to fill.  This chaplain will provide spiritual care to the expectant mothers on our antepartum floor, to our postpartum families and to bereaved families when pregnancy fails; membership in our bereavement and palliative care committees is also part of this position’s call, as is excellence in staff care.

THE JOB:

Reporting to the Program Director and to the Manager of Psychosocial Services, the Spiritual Care Coordinator/ Bereavement Coordinator provides comprehensive spiritual and bereavement care services within the framework of the George Mark Children’s House Mission and the philosophy of pediatric palliative care to GMCH children-patients, families and caregivers. This position is a full-time, salaried and benefited position with a flexible schedule including daytime, weekend, and evening hours requiring frequent local travel. 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Spiritual Care Coordinator/ Bereavement Coordinator will:

1.      In conjunction with the Inter-Disciplinary Team (IDT), assess all children and families receiving care from GMCH with special consideration given to the cultural, religious, spiritual, physical and psychological needs and coping skills of each member of the family.

2.      Develop and coordinate end-of-life, transitional, and/or respite spiritual care plans for each child and their family.  The overall purpose of spiritual care plans will be to maintain and/or improve the spiritual goals for daily quality living and adaptation to loss/change.

3.      Develop and coordinate bereavement services for families and caregivers of GMCH children-patients, which may include specific faith or interfaith ritual traditions, funerals and memorial services, celebratory events, group support services and bereavement programs. These services, events and programs include, but are not limited to, Annual Remembrance Day, Tiles and Tales Days, placement of memorial stones, Annual Family Picnic, Pumpkin Day, special days for siblings, and sending cards at holiday times, birthdays and the anniversary of a child’s death. The successful execution of these services, events and programs will often require close coordination with the Child Life Specialist and Manager of Psychosocial Services.

4.      Discuss referrals to clinical psychologist when the psychosocial team reviews an acute need.

5.      Document interventions and maintain accurate clinical records in the Medical Record System (Misys). 

6.      Make phone calls to patients, families and caregivers at regular, documented intervals.

7.      Conduct home visits for the purpose of individual and group counseling to patients and families as needed.

8.      Routinely attend Inter-Disciplinary Team (IDT) meetings, daily clinical rounds meetings, Bereavement Committee meetings, various ad-hoc meetings and meetings of (and membership in) the East Bay Bereavement Network.

9.      Provide in-service training and continuing education to staff, volunteers and students on spiritual care, bereavement issues, and other related topics as needed.

10. Provide orientation on spiritual care and bereavement issues as relates to new GMCH staff and volunteers as requested by Program Director.

11. Assist with Memory Building and Final Wish Activities for children and families.

12. Assist with organizing and/or officiating funeral or memorial services as requested.

13. Attend to the spiritual needs of staff and volunteers via individual and group counseling as requested.

14. In coordination with the Volunteer Manager, establish and develop connections with the Bay Area religious community at large to recruit, train, and supervise volunteer chaplains interested in providing spiritual care at GMCH in their specific tradition as needed. 

15. Assist with development and launch of a new GMCH bereavement website functioning as an interactive, multimedia support program for bereaved parents and siblings. This project requires working with outside IT contractors, the Manager of Psychosocial Services, Program Director and other staff as needed.

16. Develop and write a new brochure outlining GMCH bereavement services.

17. Develop and write a quarterly newsletter for bereaved families.

18. Develop and execute a quarterly introductory educational program for newly bereaved families.

19. Assist with coordination of Footsteps program.

20. Develop a list of, and professional relationships with, agencies in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area that provide family bereavement services.

21. Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Manager of Psychosocial Services.


REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

1.      Master’s in Divinity (M. Div.) degree or equivalent preferred.

2.      Completion of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) basic unit required. Full year of CPE preferred.

3.      Sufficient grief counseling, hospital chaplaincy or hospice chaplaincy experience required.

4.      Significant employment history working with multi-faith and multi-cultural children and families with diverse theological frameworks and congregations.   

5.      Significant general experience working with children, teens, young adults and families.
